I live in a bible belt … mostly catholic and I have to say…. the churches are all huggggge…. they are on a hill overlooking the small towns…. they are elaborate with all sorts of stained glass and arches… they make a person feel small…. what is the point of this? Is this supposed to be humble?

I’ve seen plenty of storefront churches built on flat land.

Catholic Churches are usually built beautiful etc so that people can be reminded of all of the beautiful things in God’s creation.

Well, I guess you’re not talking about my church. We were in a hotel room for a year and then moved to an old office building and fixed it up.

Many of the Catholic Church’s traditions and practices are extentions of Jewish traditions and practices. If you read the Old Testament about all the detailed instructions on how the Temple and the Ark of the Covenant were to be built, you would get an idea of why some (mostly older) Catholic Churches are so ornate and beautiful. In the Old Testament, the Temple and the Ark contained the presence of God, and Catholics believe the same about their churches; that Jesus is always present in the Tabernacle of every church. So logically, wouldn’t you want God’s house to display beauty, majesty, splendor..?. It is not to make you feel small, but to elevate your thoughts to the awesomeness of God. Don’t you think He deserves to be honored? It’s not about us, it’s about Him!
